A Commemorative Badge to mark the 200th Anniversary of the Battle of Trafalgar & the Death of Lord Nelson |
The year 1805, a time when it seemed that at long last Napoleon would invade Britain. A country at the heart of an Empire which for over a decade had stood in the path of his complete domination of Europe. It was the year when in spite of all the evidence to the contrary, Napoleon had finally convinced himself that his united fleet could annihilate any squadron which the British could put to sea. How wrong he was !
Later that year on 21st October off Cape Trafalgar on the Spanish coast one of history's most famous naval engagements was to take place. A naval action that would finally put an end to Napoleon's dreams of invasion and deliver Britain a mighty victory but one which would rob the Empire of one of her most famous sons.
To mark the bi-centenary of this most famous occasion in British history the Great North Badge Company is issuing a limited edition commemorative badge. The design of which takes its inspiration from contemporary medallions and art work of both the Birmingham die sinker Matthew Boulton and the Northumberland artist Thomas Bewick.
Embossed on the reverse of each badge is Nelson's immortal signal to the fleet on the day of the Battle of Trafalgar;
"England expects that every man will do his duty"
In limiting the number of badges produced and ensuring that each is individually numbered it is hoped that they will have added appeal to all.
